About Venice
Venice is a city in Sarasota County with 25,463 residents in the 2020 census (Wikipedia: Venice, Florida). Locals call the heart of town "Venice Island," a piece of the mainland separated by the Intracoastal Waterway and reached by bridges. The city was planned in the 1920s by John Nolen, with Northern Italian Renaissance-style architecture, and is known for the fossil shark teeth that wash up on its beaches.
Housing across Venice
- Venice Island. Some of the oldest buildings in the area alongside mid-century homes and beachside condos. Close to the Gulf, salt exposure is real.
- Villas and condos. Attached homes with small mechanical closets and shared walls; condenser placement and association rules come up often.
- East of I-75. Newer master-planned communities with larger homes and younger systems.
- South Venice. An unincorporated area of mostly 1960s to 1980s homes south of the city.
Comfort for older residents
Venice has a large retired population. A failed AC on a summer afternoon is more than an inconvenience for older adults, so it pays to keep systems maintained and know the warning signs. See maintenance.
Winter residents
Homes closed up from spring to fall need humidity control. The EPA target is below 60 percent indoor humidity (U.S. EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home). See the humidity guide.
Permits
Inside city limits, the City of Venice handles building permits (City of Venice). South Venice and other unincorporated areas go through Sarasota County (Sarasota County Government (permits and emergency management)).
